Instant #1 New York Times Bestseller Listed as a Times Self-Help Book of the Year Discover the critical art of rethinking: how questioning your opinions can position you for excellence at work and wisdom in life Intelligence is usually seen as the ability to think and learn, but in a rapidly changing world, the most crucial skill may be the ability to rethink and unlearn. Recent global and political changes have forced many of us to re-evaluate our opinions and decisions. Yet we often still favour the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt, and prefer opinions that make us feel good, instead of ideas that make us think hard. Intelligence is no cure, and can even be a curse. The brighter we are, the blinder we can become to our own limitations. Adam Grant - Wharton's top-rated professor and #1 bestselling author - offers bold ideas and rigorous evidence to show how we can embrace the joy of being wrong, encourage others to rethink topics as wide-ranging as abortion and climate change, and build schools, workplaces, and communities of lifelong learners. You'll learn how an international debate champion wins arguments, a Black musician persuades white supremacists to abandon hate, and how a vaccine whisperer convinces anti-vaxxers to immunize their children. Think Again is an invitation to let go of stale opinions and prize mental flexibility, humility, and curiosity over foolish consistency. If knowledge is power, knowing what you don't know is wisdom.

#1 New York Times Bestseller “THIS. This is the right book for right now. Yes, learning requires focus. But, unlearning and relearning requires much more—it requires choosing courage over comfort. In Think Again, Adam Grant weaves together research and storytelling to help us build the intellectual and emotional muscle we need to stay curious enough about the world to actually change it. I’ve never felt so hopeful about what I don’t know.” —Brené Brown, Ph.D., #1 New York Times bestselling author of Dare to Lead The bestselling author of Give and Take and Originals examines the critical art of rethinking: learning to question your opinions and open other people's minds, which can position you for excellence at work and wisdom in life Intelligence is usually seen as the ability to think and learn, but in a rapidly changing world, there's another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn. In our daily lives, too many of us favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt. We listen to opinions that make us feel good, instead of ideas that make us think hard. We see disagreement as a threat to our egos, rather than an opportunity to learn. We surround ourselves with people who agree with our conclusions, when we should be gravitating toward those who challenge our thought process. The result is that our beliefs get brittle long before our bones. We think too much like preachers defending our sacred beliefs, prosecutors proving the other side wrong, and politicians campaigning for approval--and too little like scientists searching for truth. Intelligence is no cure, and it can even be a curse: being good at thinking can make us worse at rethinking. The brighter we are, the blinder to our own limitations we can become. Organizational psychologist Adam Grant is an expert on opening other people's minds--and our own. As Wharton's top-rated professor and the bestselling author of Originals and Give and Take, he makes it one of his guiding principles to argue like he's right but listen like he's wrong. With bold ideas and rigorous evidence, he investigates how we can embrace the joy of being wrong, bring nuance to charged conversations, and build schools, workplaces, and communities of lifelong learners. You'll learn how an international debate champion wins arguments, a Black musician persuades white supremacists to abandon hate, a vaccine whisperer convinces concerned parents to immunize their children, and Adam has coaxed Yankees fans to root for the Red Sox. Think Again reveals that we don't have to believe everything we think or internalize everything we feel. It's an invitation to let go of views that are no longer serving us well and prize mental flexibility over foolish consistency. If knowledge is power, knowing what we don't know is wisdom.

Ever since Sir Richard, First Baronet Harfield, took up residence in his newly built mansion at Prinsted, over three hundred years ago, the Harfield family has maintained its pre-eminent position within the parish. But status and treasure are not all that the current Harfield generation inherited from their distinguished, yet reclusive, ancestor. Sir Richard also bequeathed them two mysteries: the source of his considerable wealth; and, the true identity of his much younger wife, the enigmatic Adeline. When the painting of a beautiful young woman, bearing the signature of Sir Godfrey Kneller, one of England’s most famous seventeenth century portrait artists, is found hidden in the basement of the Harfield mansion, the Reverend Brazelle, a family friend, offers to try to identify the woman. He believes that, if successful, he might also be able to resolve those other Harfield family mysteries. It turns out that he’s right, although the astonishing discovery that he makes carries such profound and far reaching implications, and not just for the Harfield family, that he struggles to see how it can ever be made public. But that isn’t the only challenge Brazelle currently faces. He has also been drawn into helping unmask a traitor and solve a present day murder. And, by the way, he still has his duties as the Prinsted parish priest to perform and a portrait of his own to get finished.

I was born 1966 as Randall Fabel. When I was young I moved from Minnesota to Louisiana. I have lived in Florida, Texas, and Arkansas. Now Louisiana is my home. I ve been everything from a truck driver to a painter, now I m a construction foreman. They have been calling me fabulous Fabel for many years. I don t really know why, I guess it s just because of my creative mind. I have been married twice and have two step kids as well as two of my own. I also a proud step-grandfather I ve always thought that I was born to do something else. Music always has been part of my life. With every word I write there s a melody in my head. I can sing along to any one of these song. Although when I was younger I never would write down these melodies in my head. Now that I m older I have two teenage kids of my own that I love very much. I tell them to follow their dreams. I have been sitting on my dream all along, which is to be an acknowledged song writer. My kids give me all the inspiration that I need to succeed in life. I am up and down in this crazy life, and I think it s about time to become who I was meant to be. Maybe something good will happen here, who knows the sky s the limit so they say. So peace love and happiness.

From 1995 to 2013, Stanley Fish's provocative New York Times columns consistently generated passionate discussion and debate. In Think Again, he has assembled almost one hundred of his best columns into a thematically arranged collection with a substantial new introduction that explains his intention in writing these pieces and offers an analysis of why they provoked so much reaction. Some readers reported being frustrated when they couldn’t figure out where Fish, one of America’s most influential thinkers, stood on the controversies he addressed in the essays—from atheism and affirmative action to plagiarism and postmodernism. But, as Fish says, that is the point. Opinions are cheap; you can get them anywhere. Instead of offering just another set of them, Fish analyzes and dissects the arguments put forth by different sides—in debates over free speech, identity politics, the gun lobby, and other hot-button topics—in order to explain how their arguments work or don’t work. In short, these are essays that teach you not what to think but how to think more clearly. Brief and accessible yet challenging, these essays provide all the hard-edged intellectual, cultural, and political analysis one expects from Fish. At the same time, the collection includes a number of revealing and even poignant autobiographical essays in which, as Fish says, "readers will learn about my anxieties, my aspirations, my eccentricities, my foibles, my father, and my obsessions—Frank Sinatra, Ted Williams, basketball, and Jews." Reflecting the wide-ranging interests of one of today's leading critics, this is Fish’s broadest and most engaging book to date.
