Sarah Pink draws together in a single volume a set of key writings on advances and explorations that sit at the innovative edge of theory and practice in contemporary visual research. Advances in Visual Methodology presents a critical engagement with interdisciplinary practice in the field of visual research and representation, examining the development of visual methodology as a field of interdisciplinary and post-disciplinary practice that spans scholarly and applied concerns. The book explores how new practice-based, theoretical and methodological engagements are developing and emerging in research practice; the impact new approaches are having on the types of knowledge visual research produces and critiques; the ways visual research intersect with new media; and the implications of this for social and cultural research, scholarship and intervention.

Academic and Research Literacy Practices of Final Year Teacher Trainees in Luanda, Angola presents a detailed study of students and lecturers at higher teacher training institutions where English is taught as a medium of instruction and specialisation. As such, the book will help raise the awareness of educators, teachers and supervisors of the need to be more supportive to students, and will highlight the importance of increased responsibility on the part of the students regarding their studies, especially during the process of writing their research reports. Practical experience has shown that, in most classrooms, students are typically asked to produce texts for one single audience, namely the teacher or the lecturer, who already knows what constitutes an acceptable response. However, in many classrooms, teachers and lecturers tend to believe that literacy can be defined as the ability to encode and decode texts, the ability to decipher the ‘main idea’ of a reading passage or to write a text that obeys the general conventions of language usage such as syntax, organisation, and idea development. The central argument of this book, however, is that, at higher levels of the educational system in Angola, academic and research literacy practices are, at best, questionable and, at worst, harmful. An extensive re-evaluation of assumptions regarding student capability and what it means to be a literate in the twenty-first-century ‘information society’ is of critical importance. Such a re-examination allows for extensive reflection on current practices and a powerful critique of ‘traditional’ academic and research literacy methods, and suggests ways in which practices of quality teaching and learning may be implemented.

This book provides senior managers, project- and program managers, team coaches and team leaders with thought and management tools for potentiating self-organization and creating collaborative intelligence in teams. Adapted and expanded from the 2018 Dynamic Collaboration: Strengthening Self-Organization and Collaborative Intelligence in Teams, the book aids readers in establishing team structures optimal for shared leadership, based on the longitudinal adult development of contributors, especially as team members. Drawing from theoretical and empirical research on social-emotional and cognitive development since 1975, the authors create a provocative paradigm of forming, managing, evaluating and linking teams into networks. They introduce an empirically validated team typology and workspace analysis of dialogue spaces called ‘We-Spaces’. Featuring real world examples and cases of teams that have become self-organizing, this book is a valuable resource for upper and middle level managers, CEOs, Board of Directors as well as consultants, researchers and academics in human resource management, adult development, team building, leadership and organizational management.

Debates on historical and contemporary racism have recently become the subject of increasing public interest. The Black Lives Matter movement as well as the Covid-19 pandemic have underlined the importance and urgent necessity of examining racism in society from a multidisciplinary angle. The many facets of racism in the past and present also challenge the way we deal with history ("historical culture") in a globalized world. Rather than focusing on the history of ideas and its discursive development, this volume will focus on the practices of actors. It examines how and which practices, especially practices of comparing, are constitutive in the construction of 'race' and manifestations of racism. This edited volume brings together interdisciplinary contributions from history, sociology, political science, American studies, literary studies, and media studies. An important focus lies on the social asymmetries created by racialization, including inequalities and violence. The chapters foreground historical and contemporary practices of racism and discuss their appearance in different epochs and locations.
